in the business. Keep lyricism alive, educate, and entertain, and inspire my people. I have always had my own flavor, and
over time I’ve enhanced this style by constatly creating unique flows and skillfull rhymes inspired by God, my dialect,
and numerous musical influences.”
As a young man, he often listened to the thunderstorm radio show on
local FM giant 100 jamz. He got to hear sounds from accross the planet, by bahamian artists such as K.B, Funky D, Sweet Emily,
Ronnie Butler, Bahamen, dancehall icons like Sizzla, Spragga Benz, Bounty Killer, Beenie man, and even rap greats like Common
Sense, Jay-z, Nas, Eminem, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, and Mos Def. During the interview as he reflected on these early influenes
making a point to mention that it is very important to pay tribute to all artists of past and present.
At the age of 17, Devlyn began writing and performing at local talent
shows. He began with a group called ‘CEO Playas’, but that situation never progressed due to personal family crisis.
By 19, he left his hometown of Nassau Bahamas for College in the U.S. He has earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Philosophy,
and went on to complete one semester of grad school. While in college, he formed in reggae/ rap band D.O.C.T.R.I.N.E. The
band included members Massyka of Kingston, Jamaica, and Vicky of Freeport, Grand Bahama. The group achieved some local success,
however by 2004 Devlyn decided to continue pursuing a solo career. He renamed himself ‘Jah Doctrine’ ; music inspired
by the word of God. Under his newly formed independent Record label Dat Giddy Records, Jah Doctrine helped to release an underground
album titled SugaHill Uncut with producer J. Peppa from Nigeria. The album featured a number of producers and artists, including
past group members Vicky and Massyka, Zed from Kingston, Jamaica, Tew Tone of Top Contendaz, and Pin Point Ent. out of Alabama
USA. In 2005, some of the solo tracks from SugaHill Uncut were later released on his Debut album as Dawon Stubby titled 'Dat
Giddy' released in the spring of 2005. Dat Giddy recieved significant reception heralding the emergence of a unique talent
with much promise.
Look out for Jah Doc’s upcoming album ‘Echoes of History’
scheduled for a 2007 release. Jah Doctrine feels very strongly about his music, and the message he is sending while earnestly
creating a new sound on local and international music scene. Encompassing elements from hip/hop and dancehall, he describes
his music as “Bahamian Hip-Hop/Dancehall. Real music from the heart, not for the money.” It is not at all difficult
to hear the power and wisdom in his voice, nor is it hard to see the passion, and drive in his voice. He has a purpose for
his music, and wants to deliver this message to a world wide audience. Jah Doctrine is here to stay, bringing good music and
positive energy to the music industry for many years to come!!
