WORLD CLASH
10 years and no more (13 October 2K7, Jamaica Star)

'World Clash' New York to end

Nathaniel Stewart - Matterhorn will face off with Beenie Man at the 10th and final World Sound Clash to be staged in New York, in November.

By Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

After serving up an entertaining treat to hardcore music lovers in New York, Irish and Chin Inc. have decided to retire that leg of their annual 'World Clash' event.

Damion, a representative at Irish and Chin Inc. told THE STAR that, "The market up there is saturated right now and from a financial perspective, it just wasn't working out. We withstood it for 10 years, and Canada is still 'iffy' right now."

In a recently issued release, the dancehall sound clash promoters said that this year's 10th annual World Clash - New York would indeed be the final instalment of the event.

The event, titled 'Game Over', staged on three different stages around the world, will take place on November 24 at Amazura, in Queens, New York.

The Vintage Cup Clash will feature the original 'Don Gorgon', Ninja Man selecting against the U.K.'s David Rodigan, while the Celebrity Cup Clash will see Beenie Man doing battle with the 'mentally insane', Tony Matterhorn.

dedicated fans

Finally, the main event will feature past champions Black Kat (2003, 2004), Mighty Crown (1999), Bass Odyssey (2001, 2006), Rebel Tone (2002) and Sentinel (2005).

"We are extremely ecstatic about closing out World Clash," Garfield 'Chin' Bourne was quoted as saying. "Our dedicated fans deserve to experience the best in sound clash entertainment, while being a part of history."

Tony Matterhorn, although aware of the fact that the New York leg of World Clash will end is happy about the time it spent there and is looking forward to the final 'clash' in New York.

"It a guh mad, bare people a sey wah, 'Matterhorn versus Beenie', but a jus fun and entertainment. Me an Beenie clash two time already, him win one an me win one, suh yuh know how it guh," Matterhorn said.

According to Matterhorn, "dem a plan fi keep it a Miami, but a di last one wey a guh keep a New York, cause even though it did originate a England, a deh suh (New York) was di biggest one. It probably will affect the fans there, but New Yorkers will go anywhere," Matterhorn said, "so a change of locations should not affect them too much. But mi talk to Chin an him did a sey tru a the 10th one, cause a di 10-year anniversary, dem jus a guh move it to a different location an try out a different market."

Irish and Chin Inc., founded by Garfield 'Chin' Bourne and Gilbert 'Irish' Murchison, are forerunners in the world of sound clash competitions.

For more than 10 years, they have promoted and produced premiere entertainment events including sound clashes, concerts and tours throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, Europe and Japan.

The world famous 'World Clash' in 1998 was what officially put Irish and Chin Inc. on the map and they have promoted other major events like, 'Death Before Dishonour', (Jamaica's World Clash), 'U.K. Cup Clash', 'World Clash U.S.', 'Rumours of War' (Trinidad and Tobago), 'World Clash Antigua' and 'World Clash Canada' among others

A Sound clash is a musical competition where crew members from opposing
reggae sound systems pit theirs skills against each other.

Sound clashes take place in a variety of venues, both indoors and outdoors. Traditionally, each sound system would use their own equipment. More recently, however, many venues have sound equipment 'built in'.

Primarily featuring reggae (or dancehall) music, the object is to beat or "kill" their competitors. By choosing carefully the tracks played or "selecting" and featuring exclusive, personalised tracks or dub plate specials, a sound system can stimulate a more positive reaction from their audience and so win the clash.

A Dubplate Special, also known as a Dubplate or special, is an exclusive version of a piece of music, usually (re-)recorded by a
Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, or Chutney artist for a West Indian or Caribbean Sound System. Although CD is now the preferred format for these recordings, the use of the word "Dubplate" (commonly abbreviated "dub", particularly in the Drum & Bass scene) to describe them has survived.

These recordings are often used for competing in a sound clash, in which rival reggae or soca sound systems compete with each other to produce the most imaginative or unusual dubplate specials. The exclusivity of the recording is made evident by changes to the usual lyrics to include the name of the sound system that has commissioned the recording, often remarking on the prowess of the sound system in question, and sometimes the weaknesses of the opposing sound system(s) in a given competition.

Dubplate Specials are an essential tool in a sound clash - the more exclusive the better - but they also form an intrinsic part of the Reggae industry. A notable example is the special of "No, No, No (You Don't Love Me)" recorded by Dawn Penn for a number of sound systems in the early nineties. The special recorded for Saxon sound system replaced the lyrics "No, no, no, you don't love me..." with "No, no, no, can't test Saxon", referring to the invincibility of the sound system. The song became an international hit, and Dawn Penn endorsed several other sound systems with the same lyrics and continued to do so for many years.
